What is Twin County Project Lifesaver
It is a local chapter of a national program that provides search and rescue skills for a specific and target population special needs children and adults.

Project Lifesaver relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search and rescue team.

The program is geared towards individuals that have a tendency to wander away from their home or place of living.

Wandering tendencies are seen in individuals that have Autism, Downs Syndrome, Alzheimers or other brain injuries.

Clients that are enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program wear a personalized wristband that emits a tracking signal.

When the person wanders from home or nursing center the Project Lifesaver Rescue Team responds and starts searching with a mobile locater tracking system.

On average the recovery time is less than 30 minutes.

There have been over 1000 successful searches and recoveries with no serious injuries or deaths.

42 states and over 400 communities have a Project Lifesaver team.  The personalized wristband is effective in all of these communities.  Therefore, individuals that are on vacation or travel to other areas can be located by that areas Project Lifesaver team.

The Galax-Carroll-Grayson Chapter of Project Lifesaver was started in May of 2006.  It is currently securing the funding through donations and grants that will allow the chapter to purchase approx. $9,000 of equipment and training.  The chapter will assist in establishing the rescue teams in all three localities working through the emergency services offices.  Regardless of where the individual may become lost, all three teams will respond for the search, thereby expediting the rescue process.

The Project Lifesaver board hope to establish a Foundation that will ensure that any and all persons needing this service will be able to obtain it.  Bogeys Restaurant is leading the way with this goal by naming Project Lifesaver as the benefactor in its Annual Bogey’s Golf and Beach Blast.

Aside from the rescue equipment cost, there is a cost of $265.00 per wristband transmitter with a $10.00 per month cost for battery and band replacement that will be installed by the Project Lifesaver Team.
